How to Write a Job Description That Attracts Qualified Candidates

Most job posts get this backwards. They read like a legal disclaimer — a long list of requirements, followed by a vague line about "competitive salary," followed by an email address. Then the employer wonders why they got fifty applications and only two worth reading.

Here's what actually works, based on what makes candidates stop scrolling and apply.

Lead with what the person will actually do

Candidates don't apply to job titles. They apply to a picture of their Monday morning. Instead of opening with "We are seeking a dynamic self-starter to join our growing team," open with the actual work: "You'll manage our supplier relationships, negotiate contracts with three vendors a month, and report directly to the ops director." One sentence like that tells a candidate more than a paragraph of buzzwords, and it filters out people who wouldn't want the job anyway — which saves you time later, not just theirs.

Cut the requirements list in half

Most job posts list fifteen requirements when the role really needs five. Every extra line item quietly tells qualified candidates — especially women, who research shows apply more conservatively against requirement lists — that they shouldn't bother. Go through your list and ask, for each item: would we actually reject someone who's great at everything else but missing this one thing? If the honest answer is no, cut it. Keep the three or four things that are genuinely non-negotiable, and move the rest to a "nice to have" section, if you include it at all.

Put a number on the salary

"Competitive salary" tells a candidate nothing except that you'd rather not say. A real range — even a wide one — does three things at once: it filters out people whose expectations don't match, it saves you both time on offer negotiations that go nowhere, and it signals a level of transparency that better candidates increasingly expect before they'll even apply. If your budget genuinely can't be pinned down yet, at least give a floor.

Be specific about location and flexibility

"Remote" means five different things depending on the company. Say exactly what you mean: fully remote, remote within Pakistan only, hybrid with two office days, or on-site with occasional travel. Candidates in Pakistan and the Gulf are increasingly filtering job searches by this one detail first — vague wording here just means qualified people skip past your post before reading anything else.

Skip the culture clichés, show the actual culture

"Fast-paced environment" and "work hard, play hard" have been drained of meaning by overuse — they signal nothing specific anymore. If you want to convey what it's actually like to work at your company, say something concrete instead: how often the team meets, whether there's a real onboarding process, what a new hire's first month looks like, or what the last person in this role went on to do. Specifics build more trust in three sentences than a full paragraph of adjectives.

Make it easy for candidates to apply — and for you to read what they send

This part matters more than most employers realize: a great job post still fails if the applications that come back are unreadable. A CV built in an inconsistent format, with text boxes and graphics that break when opened on a different device, can bury a genuinely qualified candidate under formatting problems that have nothing to do with their skills. This is exactly why JobFixo pushes every candidate through a CV builder with ATS-ready templates before they apply — you get consistent, readable applications from the start, instead of spending your first pass just squinting at layout.

Put it together

A job post that follows this — a clear day-to-day description, a short and honest requirements list, a real salary range, exact location terms, and a couple of specific details instead of buzzwords — will get you fewer applications than a vague one, but a far higher share of them worth reading. That trade is almost always worth making.
